Une autre histoire de la<\/em> <em>philosophie<\/em>, traduit de l\u2019anglais (\u00c9tats-Unis) par C\u00e9cile Dutheil de la Roch\u00e8re, Premier Parall\u00e8le. 475 p., 26 \u20ac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u00ab Chaque fois que nous pensons que <\/em>\u00ab \u00e7a n\u2019aurait pas d\u00fb arriver \u00bb<em>, nous nous engageons sur un chemin qui m\u00e8ne \u00e0 la question du mal. \u00bb<\/em> C\u2019est de cette exp\u00e9rience ordinaire d\u2019un d\u00e9calage entre ce que le monde <em>est <\/em>et ce qu\u2019il <em>devrait \u00eatre <\/em>que Susan Neiman, philosophe sp\u00e9cialiste des Lumi\u00e8res, fait l\u2019objet de son livre magistral, <em>Penser le mal<\/em>, initialement paru aux \u00c9tats-Unis en 2002 et enfin traduit en fran\u00e7ais par C\u00e9cile Dutheil de la Roch\u00e8re. Cette d\u00e9finition, qui r\u00e9cuse toute forme d\u2019essentialisation du mal au profit d\u2019une interrogation sur les origines, les formes et les r\u00e9ponses philosophiques apport\u00e9es au choc existentiel qui le r\u00e9v\u00e8le et le constitue, appara\u00eet comme le parti pris majeur de la philosophe. Il est en effet indissociable de l\u2019intention pol\u00e9mique qui fonde son projet : d\u00e9fendre la pertinence, voire la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 d\u2019une interrogation proprement philosophique sur le probl\u00e8me du mal, contre son assignation \u00e0 la seule sph\u00e8re religieuse et th\u00e9ologique. L\u2019auteure la met en \u0153uvre \u00e0 partir d\u2019une relecture in\u00e9dite de l\u2019histoire des classiques de la philosophie occidentale moderne et postmoderne, au croisement de la m\u00e9taphysique, de l\u2019\u00e9thique et de la psychologie morale. Neiman s\u2019efforce donc de reconstituer les changements qui ont affect\u00e9 nos sensibilit\u00e9s morales et nos constructions de l\u2019intol\u00e9rable1, des Lumi\u00e8res \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque contemporaine. Cette approche s\u2019appuie sur une id\u00e9e forte : la formulation philosophique du probl\u00e8me du mal repose traditionnellement sur la distinction entre le <em>mal m\u00e9taphysique<\/em>, associ\u00e9 \u00e0 la finitude ; les <em>actes de cruaut\u00e9s<\/em>, renvoyant au mal moral ; et les <em>\u00e9pisodes de souffrance<\/em>, d\u00e9finis comme mal naturel.
